Representatives of 9 indigenous tribal groups and international conservation agencies came together to address the devastation of the Amazon Basin created by unchecked urban development. We spent 6 days helping build consensus on how the tribes and the conservation agencies could more effectively work together to create a sustainable future for an ecologically sensitive part of the planet.
We worked in four different languages with professional interpreters. We used the participants who were bilingual to translate as needed. All ideas from the small group work were posted in multiple languages. When we offended the elders because of our own ignorance, we set up translated apology sessions. By the end of the six days, many who had been resistant to facilitation processes, came up to us and said "we need these skills in our countries. Can you teach them to us?" Regrettably, funding ran out for this project but all of us left changed and more hopeful about the future.
